Wildlife Safaris
Tanzania has one of
the largest wild animal populations in the world. To see all of Tanzania’s
attractions in one visit would be impossible.
Parkview Inn is located in
Moshi, just 300 Km from the greatest wildlife attractions in the world which
makes it an ideal base from which to have your dream safari. Some of the
attractions on the Northern Circuit are Tarangire and Lake Manyara National
Parks and the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti.
Tarangire National Park
An easy drive from Moshi,
Tarangire is well worth a visit on its own merits, or as part of a safari
circuit including the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara.
The
Tarangire National Park is named for the Tarangire River, which flows through
the 2,600 square km park, providing a brackish but constant supply of water,
even in the height of the long dry season (June-October). Wildlife comes from
as far as northern Lake Natron; the water pools are surrounded by herds of
wildebeest, zebra, eland, elephant, hartebeest, buffalo and fringe-eared Oryx,
often matching the animal concentrations of the more famous Serengeti. The
animals share the water with an abundant and remarkably diverse bird
population, such as Fischer's lovebirds, green wood hoopoes, go-away birds,
hornbills, kingfishers and cuckoos. In fact, Tarangire boasts the highest
recorded number of bird breeding species for any habitat in the world!
Lake Manyara National Park
Lake Manyara lies
about 25Km due west of Moshi, right at the edge of the Great Rift Valley. The
location of Manyara means it is perfectly placed for a day trip or en route
visit to or from Ngorongoro or the Serengeti. The national park lies on the
western side of the lake, which stretches for roughly thirty miles. At just
330 square kilometres, Manyara is small, but rewarding. The park is squeezed
between the sheer rift wall to the west, some two thousand feet high in
places, and the lake to the east. Perhaps best known for its elephant and
tree-climbing lions, Lake Manyara holds impressive populations of game
including hippo, buffalo and giraffe and over 380 species of birds.
Ngorongoro Crater
Ngorongoro Conservation Area houses the 600m tall Ngorongoro Crater, where
you can see spectacular views. On Ngorongoro’s 20km wide floor you are able to
see endless amounts of wildlife, including lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalos,
gazelle, zebra and reedbuck, as well as thousands of flamingo wading in the Lake Magadi, the soda lake on the floor of the crater. Local Masai tribes people have
grazing rights here, and you may well come across them tending their cattle.
Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti is Tanzania's most famous game park. Here you are able
to catch a glimpse of what much of East Africa must have looked like before
hunters. On these seemingly endless and almost treeless Serengeti plains are
millions of animals. They are always on the move in search of grassland and are
watched and preyed upon by their predators. It's probably one of the most
incredible sights you will ever encounter. Serengeti is also famous for its
lion, cheetah and giraffe populations .
