Routes

Marangu
The Marangu Route is
one of the easiest to ascend Kilimanjaro and
offers walking on gentle forest and moorland paths up to 4,700m
above sea level. Above that, scree leads to Gillman's Point on the
often snowy crater rim which is then followed to Uhuru Peak.
Accommodation on the mountain along this route is in comfortable
huts.
Machame
The Machame Route is a popular but tougher option. It follows steep
forest paths, through beautiful forests and moorland zones to Shira
Plateau. Easy scrambling and airy ridges lead to the final scree and
hence the crater. The Mweka Route is generally used to descend after
the climb along this route. Accommodation using this route is in
tents.
Rongai
This route is
fast gaining in popularity and is considered to be the easiest
routes up the mountain. It is the only route starting from the north
side of the mountain at Rongai a small village close to the Kenya
border. The climbing conditions are drier on the northern side of
the mountain and there are spectacular sweeping views over the broad
flat Maasai lands. Accommodation on this route is in tents. The
summit is reached via the east side of Kibo and the descent is via
the Marangu route.
Lemosho
The Lemosho
Glades Route is the least used route to ascend Mount Kilimanjaro. It is
the most beautiful and goes through one of the few areas on
Mount Kilimanjaro that is rich in game such as buffaloes, elephants
and other big game animals. Accommodation on this route is in tents.
